Oh my god, the Doctor’s retirement in The Snowmen makes more sense now! He wasn’t just mourning the loss of Amy and Rory, he was mourning the loss of his wife! All of what Vastra was saying, like, “Heartbreak is a burden to us all; pity the man with two”—that was about River too! He must’ve sent River off to the Library sometime after The Angels Take Manhattan! WHY DIDN’T THEY JUST SAY SO?
It’s a shame they only ever showed that in a mini episode…Could’ve been really sad…and it was important to know. Changes the way I see his relationship with Clara completely—she’s his rebound.
